While the client lies still with the stones laid on the body, the massage therapist uses another hot stone to firmly but gently apply massage strokes on the torso, arms and legs. The client can choose the light strokes of Swedish massage or the more intense strokes of deep tissue massage. The firm pressure of the hot stone will give a very different experience as compared to Swedish massage therapy or deep tissue massage therapy applied with the therapist's bare hands.
Hot stone massage therapy is effective in boosting the flow of blood to the specific areas being treated, thereby improving circulation and accelerating the healing process. This occurs as the heat from the stones penetrates deep into the muscles.
Some massage therapists include the use of some cold stones in hot stone massage therapy, especially in cases where there is muscle injury or muscle inflammation. Combining hot stones and cold stones in one treatment session is also said to be an effective method of detoxification.
