Indiana Jones and the Staff of King PSP GAME
The "Indiana Jones" series has proven to be one of the most lucrative in video entertainment history as the immensely popular film series have created everything from television cartoons, action figures to Video Game adaptations. Rates in the latter has not been great but we had hoped Indiana Jones and the staff of Kings would provide some lively fun for those still looking for a decent PS2 game. Unfortunately, despite a decent amount of diversity in gameplay elements and a fairly simple pick-up-and-play style, left the technical drawbacks and considerable control issues us with a bad taste in your mouth. This is one of those games that might have been a better buy than half of its $ 29.99 price tag, but even then, we would not automatically recommend it. Developer A2M really needed to refine the combat and overall control mechanics and because they are so clumsy that we end up more frustrated than entertained. The pacing is good and we really loved a couple of the concepts (disarming enemies with the whip tops our list), but it just is far overall.

For some reason it seems that many designers have settled into a comfortable than mediocre condition for PS2 games these days, it's as if they all use the same graphical palette. So far in 2009, most of all the new PS2 titles we've seen have been at approximately the same visual level, which means they are mostly consistent, devoid of crippling glitches and hitches, and completely incapable of better experience to meet levels. In other words, the graphics are okay and there is little more to say (yeah, it rhymes;? What about it). The Kings staff is indicative average detail, special effects are somewhat bland and uninspired, and there are several notable highlights in the background environments, but nothing too extraordinary. The game seemed to be too dark - even with the benefit torches - and the very loose camera would occasionally reveal some muddled and murky visuals. With this presentation, the game really needed depth and addictive gameplay to save it from oblivion, but as you will soon find out that not happened.
In some ways the sound is worse because of impure voice acting, boring sound effects and a soundtrack that gets repeated within the first hour. Granted, we certainly need this classic Indy theme, but does it really need to be heard every 15 minutes? The lack of original compositions does not help, and besides the sharp crack of the whip, was the battle effects found wanting. The battle sounds like nothing more than boring "thuds" and even tumbling rock or explosions had little effect. And as has been the hallmark of the latest PS2 productions, the balance between effects, narration and soundtrack was all over, which means we get a very uneven set of sounds all our adventures. The problem is that with action / adventure titles like this, do we really need a strong audio accompaniment to keep us involved and busy, and when there is so little effort put forth, the generic offers always fails to do its work. The same argument can be made in relation to graphics, and at the end of the day, both graphics and sound are painfully average. If there was more t analyze, we would dive right in, but unfortunately the technical level of Indiana Jones is just ... meh.
The game first takes you through the standard tutorial segments on top of actual gameplay. Basically, most games in this genre after a very similar formula: the first part of the game will not be much of a challenge because it is designed specifically for the sake of opening the player. Once that part is over, the player must have a clear understanding of the controls, he will need the remainder of the hunt, but it is likely that he will run into new skills and abilities as the adventure progresses. Staff of Kings is no different because you want to start by going after an artifact, which subsequently disappears into the hands of the Germans (gee, that sounds familiar). It is during this time where you will learn the basics of exploring and fighting, but it will not take long for you to realize that things are not quite as responsive or intuitive as you might have hoped. It's too bad, too, because as we mentioned in the intro, there are quite a few decent concepts that have worked out, the developers had taken the time to fine-tune control. Instead we are left with a game that feels slow, clunky and even frustrating thanks to the lack of response from commands.
Indy can punch quickly with a press the X button or throw a more powerful punch by holding the X button, and he can also dodge, pick up items to use as weapons, throwing them the very same items, use his whip to either disarm or pull enemies against him, and perform fighting moves when prompted. All this sounds great, it makes it look as if Indy is an appropriate jurisdiction altogether. But while the ideas are solid, implementation and execution leaves much to be desired and some useful abilities are curiously left out in the cold. Wait ... we can not jump? We can not block? There is no way to just get hold of a person without a whip? And when we hit the X button to punch or Circle button to escape, we expect that seamlessly combine with the movement of enemies, but too many times, these enemies simply to beat at Indy because he A. can not block, and B. is too slow. Dodge is almost comical, Indy will duck for several seconds, could mean that the enemy actually throw a punch well after you have ducked, but he will still miss. I suppose picking up items to use as a weapon works fine, and disarming the enemy is much cool, but beyond that ...
You will do other things besides fight, of course. You must use your whip to swing across gaps, light torches so you can find your way in darkness, solve a few puzzles and even jump in some cars (this includes an airplane that was not bad addition). Again, this should all come together to present the player with an interesting and good pace adventure, and while the pacing is good, clunky controls just override everything. Then you have to factor in wacko camera that can easily turn too fast or put you at an immediate disadvantage if you fiddle with it during battle. It also seems to be zoomed in too far, it should have been withdrawn when it is in God of War franchise. It is a perfect location for the third person action games. There are also environmental prompts that are designed to help you, these are known as "hotspots" and it generally involves your whip and some unfortunate soul standing under a structure of some sort. All you have to do is hook your whip on said structure and move down, causing it to fall on the heads of the enemy. It works fine but the camera does not always let you see these hotspots, you often find them after all the bad guys are gone.
Indiana Jones and the staff of Kings is quite unremarkable. The solid design ideas and diverse nature of the gameplay keeps it semi-interesting, but it never comes out and grabs you. And in reality it just does not have this ability. The techincals is too sad and out-of-date (even for PS2 software) will clunky controls put a damper on almost everything you do and the story is about as memorable as the game itself. I suppose that if it turns into the bargain bin for ten dollars, and you happen to be a huge Indiana Jones fan, it might be worth watching, something to play through on a rainy day. But it is certainly not recommended at this $ 30 price range and although there is nothing terribly wrong with this production, it's just ... just ... 'Yawn'
