Scavenger Hunt Break Down
O.K., let's break down the Scavenger Hunt as basic as we can for newcomers to the game.
There are various ways to play these, of course, as there is no "official" game when referring to how we entertain ourselves and our children. But the two forms of play that seem to be the most common are the Scavenger Hunt and the Treasure Hunt - although both are commonly referred to as "scavenger hunts", so that's how we'll categorize them.
I'll start with the treasure hunt version of the scavenger hunt. This is a game consisting of a succession of clues hidden around the house, outside, or wherever you've decided to have the playing area. At the end, the "hunter" finds a treasure. For instance, you may hand the player an index card with the words "I am a noodle head" written on it. Your child may then find the NEXT clue sitting on top of a box of macaroni and cheese. And so on and so on until they find the treasure. Simple enough, right?
The second type of scavenger hunt seems to have a rich tradition in neighborhoods. Basically, the host of the hunt will create a list of common (or not-so-common) household items for kids to find in the neighborhood, hand them the sheet, and let them loose. There are so many variations to this one and a lot of room for creativity. Usually it's things like a fork, a pop can, or other common items, but one could expand the search to include rare, interesting finds as well.
