Out of the new movies out on dvd, Prince of Persian is one of the big blockbuster. "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time", primarily based on the well-known Video Game, has enough dash and style with decent acting and incredible special effects that keep this illogical tale from sinking during the summer time run of movies. The film is produced by famed action expert Jerry Bruckheimer and stars a beefcake Jake Gyllenhaal and yes it plays well as a sword in the desert fantasy film.
The setting is an made up version of the ancient Persia, and it is all swords and horses, blowing wind and sand, mighty cities and noble princes. Dastan has two nobly born stepbrothers: Tus (Richard Coyle as the square-featured and hesitant one) and Garsiv (Toby Kebbell as the toothy and bellicose one). Led by the king's silky brother, Nizam (Ben Kingsley), they lay siege to a town called Alamut where it's believed are concealed weapons of mass destruction.
Inside the holy city, the army takes captive the princess, Tamina (Gemma Arterton, showing much more spunk in comparison with the Clash of the Titans remake). King Sharaman comes with words of reprimand. He and Tamina flee, uneasy allies in a quest to prove Dastan's innocence, reveal the real murderer, and keep a mystical dagger with time-travel powers from slipping into corrupt hands.
The producers additionally had the smart idea of encouraging experienced Alfred Molina (Spiderman 2) to ham it up as Sheikh Amar, a dazzling wheeling-dealing reminiscent of Sydney Greenstreet in Casablanca. The film is filled with Special effects, compared to other new movies out on dvd. I wish the film wasn't so visually junky-looking, and that the CGI action sequences (including sand, and weapons, and the possible destruction of the earth) weren't so clearly CGI created. They are distractions to the movie narration.
He went to the gym and toned up for the role, and he does a effective job with a foreign accent. The film doesn't seem to deserve the PG-13 rating since video game actions are pitched at 10-year-olds, and older teenagers may find the movie a little bit tame. The boxoffice intake for this movie ought to be a healthy one, given the celebrity cast.
With all the action and mayhem, the audience might be distracted from the realization that a lot of what goes on throughout this film makes little sense. In favor of keeping the narrative moving, logic isn't employed much in the film. It's on a treadmill, but Newell is almost skilled enough to make that not matter until the "cheat" happens and we're left feeling that Prince of Persia could have been a lot shorter. The director also pays homage to the origin of the video game. Game enthusiasts will find a lot of the jumping, climbing, swinging, and other maneuvers employed by the characters to be familiar. Needless to say, it's much more fun to play a game than it is to view one being played, and this applies here, as well. In that aspect, of the new movies out on dvd, this may be worth renting but not buying.
Jerry Bruckheimer, the armageddon movie veteran, had already with success turned a Disney park ride (Pirates of the Caribbean) into 3 motion picture blockbusters. It's no surprise he effortlessly turned this video game into a summer box office cash maker. The movie is fast an fun, - a lot of action for not much reason. Bottomline: it's a blade and magic adventure that's enjoyable but without substance. You may as well just purchase the Playstation 3 video game: the experience ought to be comparable. I'm sure you won't see that in other new movies out on dvd.
