Grandia - A Fantastic RPG, Forgotten by Most
Grandia starts with one of our young female heroines running through a suburban area in a town, looking for a boy named Justin and actually screaming for him! For many RPG-players Grandia was one of the first games we played that had extensive voice acting. Sure, the voice acting is pretty mediocre compared to the games today but back when the game was release even the tiniest bit of voice acting was rare. Grandia was released 1997 for the Sega Saturn in Japan and was later ported to Playstation 1 and released in 1999 in North America and while the game was mostly overlooked due to being released close to Final Fantasy 7, it still became a gem to those that played it.
Grandia featured a somewhat innocent story about a young boy named Justin and his young friend Sue (and Sue's pet Puffy) wanting to go on adventures and explore the world! Most people around Justin and Sue believe that the entire world has been explored and that the world ends at "the end of the world" which in fact is an ever growing huge wall but Justin refuses to believe in this and sets out for adventure with his friend Sue. Deciding to explore the nearby Sult Ruins they run into the Garlyle army currently running a archeological investigation there and they decide to sneak in.
Upon reaching the end of the ruins, a stone left to Justin by his father starts to glow and a hidden door opens. Justin and Sue ventures inside and see a hologram of a woman calling herself Liete telling a story of an old civilization called Angelou. Justin and Sue quickly decide to find this fallen civilization when no one else have and after having a run in with the Garlyle forces on their way back home, it's time to find out their next move. A boat leaving for the "new continent" is their best bet to find information about Angelou but Justin thinks that such a trip is too much for his young friend Sue and unfortunately wants to leave her behind. Sue, being quite upset about this, kicks Justin in the chin and runs away crying. Early next morning while Justin boards the ship he hears about a famous adventurer called Feena also being onboard, he tracks her down and decides to talk to her about adventuring but when he finds her she very uptight and talks down to Justin.
She's a "licensed adventurer" and he's just a kid (despite them being about the same age) and won't listen to him. While having this discussion they find out that Sue's snuck onboard inside a barrel! The ship's crew wants to throw her overboard (it's a bad luck to let a stowaway stay onboard) but Justin and Feena objects. Not wanting to anger the famous adventurer the captain agrees but regrets it quickly when a thick fog envelopes the ship and somehow stops their ship. The fabled ghost ship appears and lay anchor right next to them and it's up to Justin, Sue and Feena to fix this since it's their fault for convincing them not to throw Sue overboard.
This is just the start of their adventure together and they are going to meet a lot of colorful people and see exotic places in this magical RPG. Anyone who enjoys a good RPG or enjoys a light hearted story should definitely give this game a try and if you don't own a Playstation 1 (or don't want to track down the game) the game has recently been released on Playstation Network and is playable on both a Playstation 3 and the Playstation Portable. I can heartedly recommend this incredible game and will forever cherish it as a part of my collection and a part of my childhood.
