What fish best fits a 4 yr old on her birthday? And what fish can fit in a 1 gallon?

goldfish need at least TWENTY gallons, with 40 gallon filtration - really not for a 4 year old if you want to care for it properly.
neon tetras need to be in groups of at LEAST 6, and so therefore need swimming space in a FIFTEEN gallon tank.
bettas need a FIVE gallon tank.
perhaps a couple of cherry shrimp, and even then i doubt it. a tank that small is very hard to maintain and keep healthy. most fish available are tropical fish, and so therefore need heaters and constant temperature. in a 1 gallon tank, the water would be far too susceptible to extreme water temperature fluctuations and ammonia waste would build up **very** quickly, resulting in 25% water changes every other day. this will stress out your fish and shorten their lifespan even more.
besides, 1 gallon does not provide enough swimming space for any fish and most 4 year olds lack the responsibility to look after a fish; the most likely thing to happen is that she will overfeed it, and it will die. if not, then it would be up to someone else to take care of the routine when it comes to fish care. these are live animals and depend on you for survival, not little ornaments only for ones viewing pleasure.
