How do you take good care of a Super Nintendo and it's games?
I've had this Super Nintendo FOREVER, along with a few games that still work. I want to keep it working for as long as possible. Are there any tricks to keeping the games and the console working well?
Keeping it away from the kids as the other answer suggests kind of defeats the point of having it! Younger kids love the simpilicity of the older Nintendo games and it would be a shame to hide it away from them.
Build up of dst is also unlikely to be an issue as it does not have any internal fans. The consoles are very solidly built. As long as you treat it with the basic level of care you give your other consumer durables/electrical goods then it will last you many more years.
Similarly, the carts are also very solidly built. The only care they require is periodic cleaning of the PCB contacts that connect them to the console. On the back of the carts it says this should be done "regularly" but I only do it when a game struggles to load first try.
Cleaning them is simple. Just dip a cotton bud (a q-tip in the US) in Ispropyl Alcohol (also commonly called rubbing alcohol) and wipe the contacts clean. Repeat until no more grime is coming off. Make sure it's dried before trying it in your console! This small amount of pure alcohol evaporates in seconds. Isopropyl can be obtained from most chemists and will cost around £6 ($6) for a 500ml (approx 17 fl oz) bottle. Some people also use diluted nail varnish remover but I wouldn't recommend it.
P.S. If you're a minor, don't be tempted to drink the Isopropyl (the chemist should warn you of this)! It's not the same as drinking alcohol; it's a POISON and will make you VERY sick if you drink it!
