Urge of more memory
It was supposed to be a simple, routine operation. It wasn't. And I'm still living with the nightmarish repercussions of my foolish lust for more memory. I just bought a new machine. I loved it because I saved my 2 months' salary and then I could afford to buy it. It worked beautifully better than anyone had before. It became the love of my life. It was smooth and it performed flawlessly, executed all task with no disturbance. But of course, human wants never stops. I wasn't satisfied, I wanted more RAM. So I ordered for 64 Megs SDRAM from a local but reputable dealer. I received it the next day. It was nicely packed and was in a perfect condition. I just couldn't wait to fix it. I had already done this before and it was simple too. Child's play, nothing could go wrong. I proceeded perfectly as per the book. I almost grounded myself to the power supply, opened the ejectors, and then I gently handled the RAM aligned it to the notches and placed it into the slot. Perfect fit and snapped it in. and now way to go. I moment I switched the power button on I get to hear this high pitched sound. I immediately pulled the plug off and removed the new RAM. But alas… the damage has already been done. After the reassembled my machine it would not boot up. Damn!! I killed it. I was literally devastated. I was flooded over the wave of guilt. I replayed over the whole installation process in my mind and still couldn't find out what went wrong.
I then called my local dealer and told them about the devastation. They asked me to courier them the RAM so that they could check on it. After few days a technician from the local dealer called me up. This technician wasn't making sense at all… he was all panicking. I could notice the tremble in his voice. He explained me some stuff which was an over head transmission for me. I couldn't understand a single thing what he said. All I was conveying that I do not need the RAM, just get my computer fixed. And suddenly his call was cut off. I tried calling again but I received only a "not in service" message. I stared at my computer; it was like a lifeless body lied on the table dismantled completely. I just wanted to get a working computer back. I don't want to cause any trouble or to start a panic. I felt so bad about my machine that I decided to get it fixed by hook or by crook.
So I called my friend who owns a cyber café. She was having around 20 machines and I thought maybe she knows somebody who can repair my system. She then guided me to this company who provides tech support remotely as they reside in India. I had no choice so I ended up calling them. But after I called them I wondered why aren't they were my first choice? I got connected to a technician in minutes who asked me to assemble my system again. After that he asked me to switch it on safe mode. Then he performed few steps, of course explaining me all. And after an hour he finished with his job and then I could see my desktop again. It was almost after a week I could again access my computer as bought new. One hell of an experience!! I was almost in trauma and guilt by iYogi pulled me out of it.
