Do telephone extension cables affect the speed of adsl broadband?
i have 30m of extension from my telephone jack to my router but i have two extensions plugged into each other one 20M and the other 10m making 30M will this slow my connection down or not?
It won't slow down the speed of your ADSL, but it will make it more prone to noise and interference due to a poor quality signal.
Imagine what happens when you are on a bad quality phone line. You are talking back and forth with the other person, and because of a hissing or cracking static on the phone line, you don't always here what they say, so you ask them to repeat it. If the quality is really bad, they may have to say things over and over again until you hear everything and can answer them.
The same is true of a phone line for computers. You click on the button to go to a website in Internet Explorer, and the webpage starts downloading. But because it gets a lot of noise, it has to do this 3-4 times to get all the details right before it displays it for you. From your point of view, the ADSL may take 10 seconds to get that page, but really it only took 3 seconds but had to do error correction several times.
Thirty meters is quite a long distance to cover, and might be affecting your quality of service (QoS). You may want to try and reposition your router or cabling so that all you need is a single long extension cord instead of two. Any breaks in the cable (such as the double-sided phone adapter between the two cables) will allow noise to get into the cable and interfere with your signal.
There are also tools that you can download (sometimes the ADSL providers offer on their websites) to measure the bandwidth and quality of service you are receiving on your internet connection. You may want to test by using the ADSL without the long extensions, and then adding them on and testing again.
