Credit card numbers typically have 16 digits. What is the probability of randomly generating 16 digits and getting your Mastercard number? Express the probability as a fraction.
A question on my Statistics homework that I don't understand =(. I thought you just took 10 and put it to the power of 16 but I might be wrong??! I don't know.
10^16 is correct for this problem. But actually, the digits in credit card numbers have to follow a certain code, so a random 16-digit sequence is likely not to be a valid credit card number at all.
Also, it depends on what is meant by "randomly". I could look at your credit card, and "randomly" write down that number. Or, knowing the code for credit cards, I could randomly generate just valid numbers. In that case, the chances are much better that I will generate yours.
About 1 random number (16 digits) in 20 is a valid credit card number. Or at least, it satisfies the rules for card numbers, even if that number has never been issued.
